Abilene State Park

Just outside of the quaint city of Abilene, Texas is the lovely, all-year-fun Abilene State Park. Chock-full of Texas history, natural wonder, and outdoor activities for all ages, Abilene State Park is one of our favorite places in Central-Texas to visit for the weekend in the RV.

Abilene State Park is home to excellent fishing waters, with plenty of shady shoreline for relaxed casting, birdwatching, and nodding off. Once you reel in a big one from Lake Abilene or Buffalo Wallow Pond, take it back to your fully-loaded campsite with picnic tables, water access, sewer hookups, and electricity (for approx. only $15 a night, might we add).

Abilene State Park also boasts one of the most historic swimming pools in the United States. Built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, this stunning pool includes a high-dive, shaded seating areas, a kiddie section, and its original bathhouse. If you prefer to play in the water with a paddle in hand, rent a canoe or kayak from the boat headquarters and take to the lake. Lake Abilene is a no-wake zone, so you don’t need to worry about buzzy motors or disturbing power-boaters.

Landlubbers will feel equally at home at Abilene State Park. With a one-mile nature trail, including half-a-mile of ADA-compliant paths, a sand volleyball court, a horseshoe pit, and basketball hoops, there is plenty to do on dry land at Abilene. Abilene State Park is also a popular spot for geocaching.

A quick drive away from Abilene State Park is the city of Abilene, one of the state’s favorite “frontier towns.” Here, you can investigate the spooky Fort Phantom Hill, catch a show at the historic Paramount Theatre, visit the local zoo, and more. The city of Abilene has almost endless options for an afternoon excursion while staying at Abilene State Park.

The best way to experience any state or national park is from the comfort of your very own RV—and we’re not just saying so because we sell them! If you are ready to become the owner of a recreational vehicle of your very own, visit us today at Hanner RV Supercenter to see our versatile range of motorhomes and towables.
