RV 101: Travel Trailers, Fifth Wheels, and Toy Haulers
Are you in the market for a new RV but don’t know where to begin? There are so many options available that it can be hard to pin down which RV type is suited to how you hope to use it and the vehicle(s) you already own. To talk through the process, feel free to call us or visit us at Hanner RV Supercenter, but to get you started in the meantime, please consider the following information below about three of our most popular RV types: travel trailers, fifth wheels, and toy haulers.
You really can’t go wrong with a good, old-fashioned travel trailer. These come in a wide range of sizes and levels of creature comforts. Built on standard trailer frames, travel trailers can be hooked up to your truck or SUV using a standard ball hitch receiver. These trailers also offer a number of amenities, which vary by size and type; these can include water supplies (in bathrooms and in kitchens), dining areas (including a table and refrigerator), and even a private bedroom.
You will need some practice to get accustomed to maneuvering with a travel trailer, especially in reverse. Their benefit comes from their flexibility, however, in that you should not have to buy a new vehicle specifically to tow your trailer.
Not to be confused with the odd man out at the movies with two couples, a fifth wheel trailer is similar in many ways to a standard travel trailer, except that it has a gooseneck connector that attaches to the vehicle you will be towing with. This makes towing maneuverability much easier, and the overhanging section adds more space for you and your family inside the trailer.
Keep in mind, however, that this limits the type of vehicle you can use to tow your trailer. If you do not own a pickup truck, you will have to invest in one to tow your trailer.
If you have an ATV, snow mobile, or dirt bike that you’ll want to take with you when you go camping, consider getting a toy hauler. These serve a very specific purpose in most instances, so while you’ll be sacrificing things such as space, you’ll be gaining the method you need to transport your favorite toys.
